The 5 Minutes Before You Call 911

by Marketing Team

When something goes wrong, there’s a moment before the sirens.

Someone falls.

A child stops responding.

A person suddenly collapses.

There’s blood. Panic. Questions coming from every direction.

And then someone asks:

“Should we call 911?”

For many people, this is where uncertainty takes over.

What do I do first?
Do I move them?
Should I give them water?
Do I start CPR?
Is this serious enough to call 911?

We tend to imagine that, in an emergency, instinct will kick in.

But emergencies don’t always work that way.

Confidence doesn’t come from instinct. It comes from familiarity.

The five minutes before 911 can feel very long.

In an emergency, five minutes can feel like an eternity.

You may be waiting for help to arrive. You may be trying to figure out what happened. You may have other people looking at you for answers.

And while you don't need to become a paramedic, knowing what to do in those first few minutes can make a significant difference.

The goal isn't to know everything.

It's to know what comes first.

Start with the basics

When you're faced with an emergency, your first job isn't to solve the entire situation.

It's to pause and assess.

Is the scene safe?

Before rushing toward someone, look around. Are there hazards? Traffic? Electricity? Fire? Water? Anything that could put you - or someone else - at risk?

Then assess the person.

Are they responsive? Are they breathing normally?

These simple questions can help determine what needs to happen next.

If the person is unresponsive and not breathing normally, emergency medical help is needed immediately, and CPR/AED steps may become critical.

You don't need to have every answer.

You need to recognize when the situation is serious and know the next step.

Calling 911 isn't failing.

Sometimes people hesitate because they don't want to overreact.

What if it's not actually an emergency?

What if someone else knows more?

What if we're wasting everyone's time?

That hesitation can cost valuable time.

If you believe someone is experiencing a serious or life-threatening emergency, call 911.

The dispatcher can help guide you through what to do while help is on the way.

You don't have to diagnose the person.

You don't have to explain exactly what's wrong.

You just need to communicate what you see and follow the dispatcher's instructions.

This is where training changes things

Imagine experiencing the same emergency twice.

The first time, you've never taken a first aid course. You freeze. You're trying to remember something you saw years ago. You're afraid of doing the wrong thing.

The second time, you've practiced the basics.

You know how to assess the scene.

You know how to check responsiveness and breathing.

You know when to call 911.

You've practiced CPR.

You've used an AED in a training environment.

You may still feel scared.

But you're less likely to feel completely lost.

That's what training gives you.

Not the ability to predict every emergency.

Not the confidence that you'll never be afraid.

The confidence to take the next right step.

You don't need to know everything.

First aid isn't about turning everyone into a medical professional.

It's about giving ordinary people the skills to respond when something unexpected happens.

Because when an emergency happens, the person standing beside you may not have medical training.

It might be you.

And you don't need to know everything.

You just need to know what to do first.

That knowledge can turn five minutes of panic into five minutes of purposeful action.
