Emergency First Aid (EFA) for Douglas College Students

This course at Douglas College is available to students at both the New Westminster and David Lam campuses. It provides a 3-year nationally recognized certification and is equivalent to WorkSafeBC Basic First Aid, meeting common academic and workplace requirements across British Columbia.

The blended format allows students to complete all theory, reading, and learning modules online at their own pace from home. They then attend a shorter in-person session on campus for hands-on skills practice and assessment required for certification.

Course Contents:

  • The Canadian Red Cross
  • Preparing to respond to emergencies
  • The EMS system and how it works
  • Check, Call, Care
  • Airway emergencies
  • Breathing and circulation emergencies
  • First aid for respiratory and cardiac arrest
  • Wound care and bleeding control

If you are looking for a more in-depth option, our Standard First Aid (SFA) course covers additional injury and medical emergency topics.

FAQs

It depends on your Douglas College program requirements.

Nursing students typically require at least Basic Life Support (BLS), and in many cases Standard First Aid as well, making the Standard First Aid + BLS course the most complete option.

Early Childhood Education (ECE) students often take Emergency Child Care First Aid, but Standard First Aid with CPR-C will also meet childcare licensing requirements.

If you are unsure, always check your program requirements before registering.

The DSU offers subsidized pricing for students currently enrolled in an active Douglas College program. We verify eligibility with the DSU after registration to confirm if you qualify for the discounted rate.

If your program has not started yet and you want to take the course early, you can still register at the full price upon request. If you are not eligible for the subsidy, we will contact you with alternative options.

Standard First Aid and Emergency First Aid certifications are valid for 3 years. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is typically valid for 1 year.

In-person courses are completed fully in the classroom. Blended courses allow students to complete theory online at their own pace, then attend a shorter in-person session for hands-on skills and evaluation.

If the Douglas College dates don’t work, you can take Emergency First Aid (EFA), Standard First Aid (SFA), or Emergency Child Care First Aid (ECC) at one of our locations, which typically run weekly. Douglas College students will also receive a student discount on these public courses.

New course dates are added every semester. If you prefer on-campus training, check with the DSU for when the next schedule is released.
