Emergency opioid harm reduction is teaches how to respond confidently to an opioid poisoning emergency and how to administer intranasal and intramuscular naloxone.

The opioid crisis is devastating Canada, worsened by COVID-19, with 7,560 deaths in 2021. Opioid poisoning can happen to anyone. Knowing how to respond could save a life. Our goal is for no one in Canada to experience opioid poisoning without someone nearby who has a naloxone kit and knows how to use it.

Emergency Opioid Harm Reduction Course Contents:

  • This is an introductory course. For the full course, see Standard Opioid Harm Reduction.
  • Module 1: The Opioid Crisis in Canada: Learn about the growing opioid crisis, the impact of prescription- and illegal drugs, and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Understand the reasons behind the crisis and how reduced access to harm reduction resources and social connection contribute to bystander reluctance.
  • Module 2:  Reducing Stigma: Examine how stigma affects opioid harm reduction and other people who use drugs. Learn how reducing stigma and using person-first language can improve access to help and health outcomes.
  • Module 3:  Understanding Opioid Poisoning Emergencies: Get introduced to opioid poisoning emergencies, including how opioids affect the body, why we use “poisoning” instead of “overdose,” and strategies to prevent emergencies.
  • Module 4:  Accessing and Administering Naloxone: Learn about naloxone, its effects, and how it temporarily reverses opioid effects. Discover how to access, prepare, and administer intranasal and intramuscular naloxone.

Course Pre-Requisites:

  • Anyone 16 years of age and older

Confidence Booster Courses:

  • Please sign up for any Emergency First Aid or Standard First Aid course to gain confidence in applying your newly learned knowledge and getting hands-on experience in a classroom setting.

Course Duration:

  • Hands-on training (Approximately 60 minutes)
