Advanced Opioid Harm Reduction (AOHR)
Emergency Opioid Harm Reduction Course Contents:
- Module 1: The Opioid Crisis in Canada: Learn about the growing opioid crisis, the impact of prescription and illegal drugs, and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Understand the reasons behind the crisis and how reduced access to harm reduction resources and social connection contribute to bystander reluctance.
- Module 2: Reducing Stigma: Examine how stigma affects opioid harm reduction and other people who use drugs. Learn how reducing stigma and using person-first language can improve access to help and health outcomes.
- Module 3: Understanding Opioid Poisoning Emergencies: Get introduced to opioid poisoning emergencies, including how opioids affect the body, why we use “poisoning” instead of “overdose,” and strategies to prevent emergencies.
- Module 4: Accessing and Administering Naloxone: Learn about naloxone, its effects, and how it temporarily reverses opioid effects. Discover how to access, prepare, and administer intranasal and intramuscular naloxone.
- Module 5: Introduction to CPR: Learn how to care for someone with opioid poisoning, including CPR for unresponsive individuals not breathing.
- Module 6: Qualities of a Helper: Discover how everyone can help in an emergency, using their unique qualities and skills to assist someone experiencing opioid poisoning.
- Module 7: Helping in an Opioid Poisoning Emergency: Recognize and provide care for opioid poisoning emergencies, applying CPR and naloxone administration. Learn the “Check, Call, Care” method and how to monitor the situation until help arrives.
- Module 8: Introduction to Self-Care: Understand the impact of emergencies on well-being and learn to manage stress. Explore the Look, Listen, Link, Live model for maintaining resilience daily and after emergencies.
- Certificate after completion
Course Pre-Requisites:
- Anyone 16 years of age and older
Confidence Booster Courses:
- Please sign up for any Emergency First Aid or Standard First Aid course to gain confidence in applying your newly learned knowledge and getting hands-on experience in a classroom setting.
Course Duration:
- Two sessions of hands-on training (Total of Approximately 120 minutes)
