Instructor candidates who qualify for this transfer pathway are entering into the Instructor Development Program with previous experience as a Canadian Red Cross Water Safety Instructor/Instructor Trainer through another recognized First Aid agency OR or are an educator (elementary or secondary level).

(F.A.I) From Another Recognized Agency: They will follow the Instructor Development Program however they will not be required to complete Step 3: Discipline Specific Classroom Component.

WSI / School Teachers (Elementary / Secondary): They will follow the Instructor Development Program however they will not be required to complete Step 2: Fundamentals of Instruction – Classroom Component.

Program Curriculum:

Step 1 – Skills Evaluation:

  • Skills Evaluation
    • First Aid skill will be evaluated
  • Pre-Requisite Verification
    • 18 Years of Age
    • First Aid Certification (a valid participant certificate for the program you wish to teach)

Upon completion, you will be given your additional course materials, you will have 60 days to move on to Step 2.

Step 2 – Fundamental of Instructions - NOT NEEDED IF "WSI / School Teachers (Elementary / Secondary)"

Step two consists of an online component, where you will learn the fundamentals of instruction, and a classroom component, where you apply these fundamentals under the guidance of an Instructor Trainer.

  • Fundamental of Instructions Online Component
    • Approx. 8 Hours
  • Fundamental of Instructions – Classroom Component
    • 16 Hours (Including Breaks)
    • 2 Days (9 am to 5 pm)

Upon completion, you will have 180 days to move on to Step 3

Step 3 – Discipline Specific Classroom Component: - NOT NEEDED IF "(F.A.I) From Another Recognized Agency"

Once you decide which program you would like to teach, you must attend the corresponding discipline-specific classroom component which focuses on the specific skills of that program.

  • Classroom Component
    • 16 Hours (Including Breaks)
    • 2 Days (9 am to 5 pm)

Upon completion, you will have 364 days to move on to completion of Step 4

Step 4 – Teaching Experience:

Step four consists of an online and a classroom component. The online details what to expect during your Teaching Experience and the classroom component provides the experience of teaching in a real classroom with the support of a Teaching Experience Supervisor.

    • 30 – 45 mins
  • Classroom Component
    • Varies by candidate (Max. 3 attempts)

Upon completion, please send your paperwork back to your Instructor Trainer.

Step 5 – Certification! :

The final step is certification. Congratulations! You are now officially a certified Instructor.
