10 First Aid Tips for Summer BBQ Season

by Marketing Team

Nothing says summer like good food, sunshine, and gathering with friends. But did you know BBQ season also sees a spike in first aid emergencies? From burns to bites to toddler tumbles—being prepared is essential to having a fun and safe time for everyone.

Here are 10 first aid tips to help keep your summer sizzle safe:

    1. Keep a First Aid Kit on Hand
Always keep a complete First Aid kit close by. Stock yours with burn cream, bandages, tweezers, a fire blanket and an EpiPen if needed.
    2. Supervise the Grill—Always
Barbeque-related incidents are a contributing factor to the spikes seen in summer emergency room (ER) visits. Many injuries are due to unsupervised flames or flammable sprays. Never leave a lit BBQ unattended.
    3. Burns? Cool, Don’t Cover
For minor burns: cool under running water for 10–20 minutes. Never use ice—they can do more harm than good.
    4. Watch for Heatstroke
Signs include confusion, dizziness, and rapid pulse. It can escalate fast, especially for kids. Get them to shade, cool them down, and hydrate.
    5. Food Allergies Are Serious
Anaphylaxis can strike in minutes. Know your guests' allergies, avoid cross-contamination, and always have an epinephrine auto-injector on hand.
    6. Toddlers + Open Spaces = Accidents Waiting to Happen
Falls, bites, burns, and choking are common summer injuries in toddlers. Have one adult assigned to supervision at all times.
    7. Choking: Learn the Signs
A silent struggle is a red flag. Every BBQ should have at least one person who knows the Heimlich maneuver (spoiler: that could be you).
    8. Take regular water breaks
Dehydration leads to dizziness and fainting—especially for kids running around or seniors outdoors too long. Keep water accessible and remember to drink at regular intervals.
    9. Bug Bites Can Turn Serious
Bee stings, wasp bites, and ticks are common BBQ guests. Know how to spot an allergic reaction—and how to remove a tick properly.
    10. Take a First Aid Course Before You Need It
Emergencies don’t wait. Be the one who knows what to do when an accident happens.
